Ah I see.

Well I just need to remove the parts and send the stator to West Country Windings for £135 and the rotor to Demeanour Customs for £100 and then job done. I believe I may as well also replace the lock nut and a gasket or two.

Am I right in saying that the stator housing normally has oil in it, which the rotor will dip into? So there is already oil drainage (or rather a return hole to the crank case) in there, to cope with the future oil jet?

Yes, the alternator is part of the main crankcase and surrounded by oil but the rotor centrifuges it away from the stator, thus the need for an oil jet to direct cooling oil directly onto the windings.

I've received my stator back from Westcountry Windings (actually located in Essex), and just looking at it I'm confused as to what is actually going wrong in a 'fried stator'. I thought it was the insulation melting away and causing a short circuit, but looking at mine now, it has barely any insulation on it, and appears to have many parts which I thought would cause a short circuit. Obviously the copper windings are in full contact with each other to begin with, so where do the short circuits happen? Is it the copper wire touching the solid metal underneath? Because it looks like some of the copper is already touching the metal inner, where the very slight lip of the green insulation is (by the bit thats 8 o'clock below)...

The copper wire is coated in shellac, the burning out appears
to be due to overheating due to inadequate oil, hence extra oil spray hole.
oil cooling winding, basically i feel the stator is on occasions running max charge, I am unsure if it has a control module, I have no doubt we will find out!
early Norton ones were encapsulated due to vibration failure!
that does not look very tidy but functional, i have been involved in water pumps that require rewinds for many years

wire thickness and number of turns govern output followed by correct sequence, This would be done by hand big motor stators done on machine

If they were coated with extra insulation material that would reduce the heat dissipation probably leading to premature failure.

So you're saying the entire copper wire is coated in shellac before winding, and therefore it is completely insulated already, and when it burns out its the shellac that dies and causes a short circuit, not the stuff they paint/dip/pour over it after the winding?

Otherwise it looks like everything copper/steel is already touching everything and therefore already short circuited.
