Out of interest is it the original oil pump drive gear or a lucky hands type. Has it stripped the teeth off the cam gears or pinion gear. Is the oil pump still free to turn. ?

Changed original drive gear at 42,000 very worn fitted replacement harley then as hadn't got LH gear. Have now so will rebuild with it. No teeth stripped and oil pump turns freely.

Dropped a valve first? or rear big end gone causing piston to hit valve and the shock loading sheared the key ? Was the pinion nut still tight?

Pinion nut still tight never touched top end oil pump drive gear changed over thousand miles ago. It is a x1 2001 engine I will show you a pic when I see you next Kev.

When you say never touched top end did you remove the rockers when you changed the oil pump gear? If you did but didn't give lifters enough time to bleed down on rebuilding it may have caught a valve when you turned it over bending it very slightly and causing it to foul fully later.
If you didn't you could still have caused damage when refitting the cam cover.
