i think this bike is fantastic despite the belt snapping, and to think buell are supplying the belt for free outside the warranty period is an obvious sign there is an issue which they dont have a leg to stand on ehy else would they give it away? anyone considering buying one would be making a right choice in my opinion but i would push for a good warranty just to be on the safe side (especially on the drive belt). anyway back to the issue in hand is there anyone who has replaced a belt themselves and any advice on hints and tips would be welcomed, especially to removing and refitting the tensioner, what wheel bearing grease to use etc etc.

this bike is fantastic and i would still recomend them to anyone they are comfy, good touring bikes with plenty of ooomph when needed so dont be put off you get problems with any bike my advice would be to have a good breakdown cover just in case and like i said get a good warranty from your dealer and dont be afraid to emphasise on belts and bearings as any dealer selling will look at belts and bearings and think no chance of them going and probably agree a good warranty to get the sale :)

any fitting tips please post :)

cheers maz will ring you on tuesday if thats ok. as for you question about lifetime warranty i have a magazine in my posession which i quote "a belt driven off road-surely not a good combination? in fact, a new partnership with goodyear in 2006 has given buell a belt drive that needs no adjustment, no lubrication and has constant tension at all times. the belt has been tested to withstand ingestion of debris such as stones and mud and buell give a lifetime guarantee on the belt for wear" that was a section from motorcycle sport and leisure issue 542 from december 2005.

hope this is of some use to you as i had it sat at my side whilst on the phone to the dealer but luckily didnt have to quote it :)if you want i can photo copy the article and post it to you

well its up to you but the plus sides i have found with this bike is as follows. good mpg even with loaded panniers and a passenger i get aprox 50 mpg at sensible speeds, also doesnt feel loaded with luggage and passenger, as much power as you need without the need to downshift, they probably very reliable in general but i maybe had a bad experience. if the article i have is any thing to go by ( and im gonna write to magazine to ask where they got info from) drive belts shouldnt be an issue if goodyear offer lifetime warranty. as for other issues i havent had any other problems myself, just keep bearings well greased up and i cant see how they can fail and for piece of mind get a good warranty from dealer or if buying private use these reasons to drive price down. they really are great bikes and i wouldnt want anyone put off because of anyones missfortune at the end of the day problems and big service bills happen to most bikes at some point dont they. eg sprockets and chains are pricey and belts are about same cost so damned if you do and damned if you dont. if you have test riden a buell and liked it then my advice would be to go for it :)

ok so ihave got my new belt now and was informed to fit it all i needed to do was remove the footrest bracket and belt gaurds and the section of the swing arm. then all you do is remove the tensioner fit the belt refit the tensioner and box it all up.

now, i have done all this with the exception of refitting the tensioner and boxing it all up. have tried with the rear wheel off the floor and rear wheel on the floor but cant get the tensioner back on as the belt wont give enough. im guessing i was miss informed about this process. i thought about taking the rear wheel off but looking at it doesnt apear to have any adjustment to carry out this process. it is the correct belt part number G0500.1AKE

any advice welcomed
