I'm not sure it'll be required due to the switching mode operation but I'll leave the wiring long enough and move it maybe to the rear near the number plate if monitoring the temps suggest it is necessary.....

after having it rewound once already  i would be going belt & braces
doing all i could to lessen the heat effect , including air flow & a heat sink too

Good idea Nutah, Its a pain and expensive to be doing jobs multiple times...do yer very best to cover everything the first time round !

Eric.

new stator is fitted, oil and filter changed, wiring modded and just waiting for the SH 847 series RR to arrive from the US and some aluminium stock to make a heat sink/bracket. Already schemed out a place to fit it behind the number plate out in the breeze so belt ,braces and sewn my pants to my strides....can't think of any.thing else I can do to make sure this is the last time!

Reading this one would think you are the only guy with an 1125 with issues but there must be stacks of 1125 owners running stock regulator/rectifiers with no problems.

I hope you get it fixed but is the solution not a simple one?

it was thought to have been fixed last time when Maz fitted the drilled rotor, new stator and mosfet in stock location........simple one..? Go on..... :D

How many folk have reliable charging without a MOSFET regulator/rectifier? It’s too confusing for me...

yeah, you're confusion is shared.....I see some comments on other US forums about running stock regs with drilled rotors and stock stator or a mosfet with stock components or any other mix and match set up.
Interestingly there does seem a common hint to keep the revs up to ensure good oil flow onto the stator with the drilled rotor. This confuses me as the output of the generator is a function of speed so there must be a point where one counteracts the other? Anyway I am guilty of short shifting and using the torque of the engine at low speeds so I guess I will change my habits...:-)
I can see the benefit of a series RR in the way it switches off the output when not required so the generator circuit is open allowing the the stator to cool rather than output to ground as it does with the stock RR and with the mosfet so I'm hoping this cures things..... As a point of interest, my mosfet in the stock location ran reeeeealllllyyyy hot.....too hot to touch, so this may have contributed to the stator failing recently.

Does the MOSFET RR get hotter than the stock RR?

AFAIK , the mosfet is supposed to run cooler than the stock RR.......I have not done a back to back test ( I never had the bike with a stock RR), but at times the mosfet was too hot to touch and it had heat transfer pads connecting it to the heat sink in the stock location.....I even adopted the left knee out stance while riding to ensure the airflow into the under seat area wasn't blocked off....looked like a right sap...." Mummy, why is that man riding with his knee out and his testicles on fire?" :-)

I got rid of my 1125 within 600 miles of ownership, it wasn’t for me, so I’ve not been able to get involved in all the belt and brace fixes (even though mine was an 08).

So, back to basics, and forgive me cos I haven’t been following this in great depth, but we have stators failing. Looking at the pics they appear to be failing because of a failure of the insulation caused by overheating (or maybe weakening by any reactive products in the oil  ).

If they are overheating, the heat can come from two sources, firstly the current draw and secondly the oil temperature in which it sits.

The fact that the MOSFET RR gets very hot suggests there is a lot of power being dissipated. Could it be 60W like an electric light bulb (you can’t hold one of them). That heat dissipation is waste and is power that is in addition to what the bike needs. What does the bike need during normal running? A load of headlights, a tail light, ignition and instruments. I would say the lights are the biggest draw. Can you measure the current draw during normal running?

As for the relay to turn phases off, surely that just loads up the remaining phases.

But back to the heat dissipation in the MOSFET RR (which is loading the stator), I wonder how the heat dissipation compares to a tuber (single phase) or an early XB (3 phase)... Can you touch those RRs without burning your hand?

And bouncing back to the stator, is it an off the shelf Rotax part? Same as an Aprilia? Do they have charging issues?

Apologies, people will be thinking I’m a :yc:  having discussed this all before etc.

So I’ll just :couch: ... but hope for a response so I can learn too...
