Apologies in advance if you get loads of posts like this, but my mate is flogging his 99/00 M2. Im not bothered about it being a show stopper, just straight and reliable. My question is, how much extra am I going to need to put aside to have the parts replaced/adjusted that will need doing assuming its as reliable as it seems to be. No idea whether it was serviced regularly before he got it, but am pretty sure he hasnt had it done. He's looking for 1800 and as i say seems to have had absolutely no trouble with it.

£1800 is a decent price indeed ...

As for recalls and upgrades, without seeing it its hard to say, there will have been some but whether they have been done or not is hard to say, again without seeing a picture ..

In any case, apparently if they haven't been done you 'Should' be able to still have them done at a dealer ..

either way, sounds like a good bike at a more than decent price

If you're anywhere near Oswestry, I'll gladly cast an eye over it but taking it to Maz would be the best solutiion.
What year is the M2? - it makes a difference as to what may need doing.

Model year is 2000 and according to the ad it had the 500 and 2500 mile services done although its now done 20500, not sure how many (if any) services were done after this.

Ah, there's the important detail which was missing earlier.

The 10k (and 20k, by inference) services are big. To do them properly can take 12 hours and, if your stealer charges £80 and hour, that's a lot of money. Check out if the 20k service has been done before going anywhere further with the discussions.

Many dealers & independents will do a fixed price 10k service, some done for £400-odd. They are not doing a full 10k service, though, they are skirting round the important bits (stripping forks, for instance) or ignoring them from the main schedule in the hope that they'll find something big which needs doing. IMO.

Cheers for the replies, 10K maybe, 15K (if there is one) I doubt, 20K definately not. Looking a bit grim so far! 1800 + 800 (?) to catch up with services... so thats £2600.. any upgrades that arent part of the servicing schedule but that are a good idea on top of that?!
Again, I know this is a banal topic but having maintenance to pay, although I love these bikes, I couldnt afford to buy a money pit, and so want it reliable. I absolutely appreciate the time you've all taken to reply and the advice, cheers!

If you keep them serviced nicely, give it an oil and filter change every few thousand miles (a 30 min job and dead easy), keep the primary chain tensioned right (a 10 min job) then it will be reliable, they are a darn sight cheaper and easier to work on than the XB range for sure and are far from money pits ... You only live once chap, enjoy it

If you want cheap and reliable buy a Honda.
At 1800 beer tokens its as cheap as chips but it could quite easily turn in to a money pit. The £800.00 service is probably only the start depending on what you want from the bike.

There seem to be some contradictions here. £1,800 is not cheap at all for an M2 that needs a 20k service (and probably didn't have a decent 10k service). By the time you've added all the other upgrades you'll be lucky to spend much less than £1,500.

I'll, no doubt, be looking for an X1 in a while and the difference in price (to me at least) between a poorly looked after early model and a late model fettled by Maz is a good £2k or so..... and that would be for cosmetically good bikes.

You're spot on there. I know someone who spent £1,800 more on an early model.
