So, couple weeks after posting 'back again' thread looking for another Buell, I find myself making a bit of a detour during an 800 mile road trip to look at another XB.

Few hours later, and my new bike is nestled up to the 'big' 125 I've just finished a resto job on

I'm guessing a few of you may know the bike and the previous owner? them sexy headers and APH sticker may be a bit of a clue.

A well known bike around these parts. Sorry to see Shelly not riding it any more but I'm sure it will give you lots of pleasure, Reg 8-)

First thing, I'm not a fan of stickers or pink, so they had to go, the rim stickers stay for now.

Image

Looking the bike over, unfortunately found quite a lot of oil coming through the fan and down the back of the rear pot.
Engine rotate time, I've done it on my previous bike and found a good guide on here so cracked on
Image

Image

I took the fan out to clean it up and noticed something a bit odd,
Image
the top fan is the one that was fitted to the bike and is tiny, the lower one came in the box of spares with the bike, the wiring was damaged and shorting so I fixed that tested the fan and decided to fit the big fan - hope that's the right choice???

So... the rocker box gasket fix; I have James gaskets, I've googled and am just confused. :?

Do I put anything on the gasket, normally I'd add a bit of red rubber grease and fit them, but there seems to be people that fit them with RTV or hylomar - what do the forum collective think?

We're big fans of pink here, Reg lOl You've not met Willy Buell have you? wb

No, you crack on, stickers are a very personal thing and the work of the Devil.

DO NOT use any sealant and don't use rubber seals from James or H-D... Buell introduced an improved seal made from hard plastic, these work very well !

Not even seen these or heard them mentioned on any forum or from googling until now - where do I get them from?

Not found a Buell hard plastic seal?

Nevertheless, continue stripping and cleaning whilst waiting for gaskets.

Subframe was a bit flakey and looked a bit awkward in silver, so it's been removed. Shock swapped, cleaned and freshened up with some satin black on the body.

And I found a grp light surround that I want to modify a bit, needs a few holes filling up first, Image

I keep them in stock but don't mail order, I'll post part numbers tomorrow.

Good Friday? Nah, Great Friday!

Spent most of the day in the garage, playing with the Buell, putting it back together, polishing the faded fasteners as I went with bench mounted grinder mop.

The exhaust got a polish first as the collector was a bit manky
Image

Then I fitted up the silencer and the free spirits tensioner, as I fitted it, I noticed some scuff marks and remembered that the tensioner on my last bike didn't fit properly either, the frame of the tensioner, hits the exhaust bracket and locks out, completely negating the point of having a sprung tensioner.
Image

I modified the rear hanger bracket, adding a slot to pull the strap in closer, also had to modify the 'gate' recess that had already been added by previous owner, then I cleaned it up on the polishing mop
Image

And bracket fitted

So what did I learn today - don't forget to fit the breather valves into the head before rotating the engine back up and bolting it in place.
I also learnt you can rotate the engine without bothering to remove all the stuff that the internet says you should. Seems like front iso bolt, top tie bar and the engine subframe/oil cooler framework loosened does the trick....

Oh and inevitable question....

The breather? that cones up from crankcase/gearbox - just in front of the starter motor...where should it go, does it get re-routed as a mod?

I tried the manual and as good as the cable/hose routing section is, I couldn't find it

Pic in the manual shows a open breather pipe cable tied to the top of the shock, i looked at this option but couldn't see how to pass the pipe back through the fan shroud, there's a cut out but its already filled with wires.

Anyway, I've bought some flat bars, like my previous bike but that are even flatter and the HUGE front master cylinder fouls the top yoke. So rescued some old Renthals from the loft, tidied them up and started to fit them, but the top yoke and fork tops were proper manky,

so...toothbrush and T-cut followed by a buff.
