I have been using the old X1 for commuting these past few months. 40mph or less roads, traffic lights, roundabouts, the normal stuff and as the pennies have been a little tight been using fuel as frugally as I can. Been running tank down to the yellow reserve light comes on before finding a petrol station, must admit first time I did this I did wonder if the light did actually work.
Though by having the light come on helps give an accurate figure to working out the fuel consumption. Been putting a gallon in, (tight git, perhaps I have northern blood in me lol) 4.54 litres then seeing how far I can get before the yellow light comes on. So far and pretty consistently getting around 55 mpg. Not bad for around town work.
Also it may be all in the mind but running the bike on just over one gallon and not carrying 3 and a half the weight saving does make the bike feel much more nimble and responsive, now if I were to loose a few stone to the bike would be a rocket ship . . .

Never thought about it, but I'm sure there are riders out there who engage in hypermiling on their bikes.....

When I was young, and even more stupid, I used to ride from home (York) to Northalerton every day on my DT250. At 19 I had no concept of how dangerous sitting back 3 ft back from a box-lorry doing 60mph was, but what I did find out that you could practically close the throttle. A perfect 'hypermiling' technique that I can recommend from personal experience. Sometimes even I am surprised I've lived this long.

Using mine to travel into the city for my jury service I'm only getting 115 miles from a tankfull on the XT

I'm not a particuarly fast rider, most of my rides are at between 60 and 80mph. Couple that with my small amount of town riding (well, what passes for town riding in these yere parts) and I regularly get about 55mpg. (and I run full U.S. gearing)

Don't forget, the 'reserve' on an X1 is only 1.3 litres, so don't pass that petrol station in case the next one is cheaper.

I rode up to Adam's place non stop and got 201 miles before I hit reserve. It was raining most of the way, so I kept to 80 or under and didn't touch a motorway.
That's over 50mpg with the Manta Ray tank.

I think the best bike I ever had for both mpg and performance was my CB250RS 'onda which regularly returned about 80mpg and could top 80mph. My SR500 regularly returned 70+mpg and could do 90+ mph. My old Katana 650 could easily exceed 110mph and returned about 55mpg. The CG125 we had as my ex-parter's learner bike returned 100+ mpg and could exceed 60mph. So current Buells seem to be the performance equal of a medium sized Suzuki from c. 1985 or - in mpg terms - a modern small car. My 10 year old Yaris averages 50mpg, the diesel fiesta I had before it averaged 56mpg - and newer smaller cars are supposed to be even more economical.

Yeah but, no but, at least we get the added excitement of snapping a belt in the middle of nowhere.

Sorry, that's 1.51 litres, according to my owner's handbook.
I once managed 20 miles with the light on, then ran out completely about 100 yards from a petrol station.
Luckily, I was on a hill and managed to coast onto the forecourt
