Hello, I've purchased an Acumen GPI for my '05 XB9SX. It came with a plug and go mini harness. I have installed it and the speedo and tacho continue to work correctly. I have been able to teach the Acumen the number of gears, ie 5 and I have chosen a neutral display. However I have been unable to get the Acumen to learn the gear ratio's. It may have successfully learnt 1 and possibly 2. I intend to try again but wondered if anyone else had problems? Is there anything special about the Buell pulsing that the Acumen might not like?
Thanks, Roger

I found a few posts in XBORG mentioning the same error - programmable only up to the second gear. It's not quite sure, why this happens, but probably the speedo or tacho signal doesn't look as is expected by the maker of the Acumen. Speedo and tacho are fed with a square wave TTL comptible signal, jumping between 0 and 5 volts. Very often the speed signal is meant do be a sine wave, fluctuating between + and - something volts, this is the case with almost every bicycle speedo, commonly driven with a revolving magnet and an inductive sensor.
Another possible reason is the high frequency of the speedo signal, much more than the one pulse per wheel rev taken usually. This might be sufficient for calculating the speed, but perhaps no more for calculation of the gear - that the device fails above the second gear might indicate such an error.

I had problems getting it to read fifth gear - took it off and fitted it to an old GSXR 600 SRAD and it worked first time.

I had a datatool shift light thingy and couldn't get that to work reliably on my M1 - sold it to a mate with a Jap multi and it worked no worry. I think that there is something about the single fire system that upsets these things :?:

You could be right there. Our engines don't have equally spaced ignition pulses like eg an inline 4. It's more 'bang-bang---------------------bang-bang-------------------etc
I had a 'Stack' tacho on my M2 and it wasn't consistant on whether it read 'bang-bang' as two bangs or one... if you get my drift.... hence sometimes I got correct rpm and sometimes half rpm displayed.

I find that once in 5th gear, when you go to move up another, you can`t...Thats a dead fucking give away as to which gear you are in. Now.......When you have selected to higher gear at low speeds, the bike will come to a dreadfully clunky, clanky and quite uncomfortable stop...Thats a sure sign that you need to be in a lower gear....Works everytime for me, if it didn`t, I would give up the will to exchange oxygen in my lungs and buy an Honda 400 Automatic :yup: :yup:

I do hope that wasn`t too sarcastic......

Hi,
I seem to remember reading that certain sections of the forum were for serious postings! Surely the technical section falls into that category.............
I am delighted with the helpful responses I have had to my genuine posting.
I am bemused by the suggestion that I should take pills or buy a Honda ( license) . I can well cope with those charlies with their senseless suggestions; they want bending over their bikes and ....... Where is the moderator ? !!!!!!!!!
I WANT MY GPI to work. Has anyone succeeded?
Roger ROFL.

Not if you haven't got a "how many gears has my bike got" indicator.

Hey!!

<<<,,although it has to be said rj, a totally unnecessary piece of christmas-tree-light-flashing-crap hardly qualifys as "Tech"
give it 'til tonight then it gets moved to "Buellchat".>>>

It's a serious technical issue. Happy to argue my case; the fact remains that I want a solution. Please leave it here where I stand a chance of getting a solution.

You cannot compare my GPI with the LED "christmas-tree-light-flashing-crap that is starting to adorne bikes these days . eg the Goldring I followed along the M62 at the weekend adorned in blue light.

Roger

What did Acumen say when you contacted their 'Technical' dept?

you could by a 1125, they have them as standard, I don't use mine though as 1 it means I can't see the engine temp of the bike, 2 it's always better to be looking where you're going, 3 I've had the ability to count since I was very young and 4 agree with what Att said!!

:yt: The '08 1125 didn't have them but when the Goldfish bowl that doubled as an instrument console was replaced with an '09 IC on my bike, I was rather disappointed to find it had this totally useless gear readout fitted. Isn't selecting the correct gear for engine load/road speed, included in the CBT training these days  ?
If Att sees a biker with one, he'll mow you down with his truck.
