Hi all. I've just returned from a cracking run down the A76, Cumnock to Dumfries road, putting about 160+ miles on the bike. If anyone is familiar with this road you can guess that I got rid of most of the chicken strips even though I'm still running it in :D

When I got back I noticed my left boot was covered in oil. I checked the engine and there was oil on the left hand casing, which to my untrained eye looked like it was coming down from somewhere around the airbox.

OK it was only a small amount of oil but it had slipstreamed back to the tyre and belt pulley area. Not good

I've a feeling it's maybe coming from a breather, but then the bike is so new to me I'm pretty much clueless about where it could be coming from. Should I just give it a good wipe and (carefully) see if it returns, or is this a sign of something more serious?

It's a right pita to check the oil at the moment without a paddock stand or any other method of keeping the bike straight so I can only guess what the oil level is. Again not good. I'll need to try and rig something up tomorrow and check as best as I can.

I'm not exactly ecstatic about oil pissing over the rear tyre and drive belt, especially when my 32 year old Z1000 (with a sight glass ;)) is and always has been tight as a drum. Modern technology, eh?

Any thoughts on why this has occurred much appreciated.

It's very easy to overfill the 1125 with oil, and many dealers do so. The dealer you're using has a dreadful reputation, so that may be a possibility. The bike has to be checked absolutely vertical in both planes to get the correct level - I cannot stress enough how important that is. The manual instructions have to be followed precisely.

Pull the top off your airbox (Torx 30) and look for oil in the filter base area, if you can see any, it's been over filled. If that's the case, go back to the shop and have a word ;)

Damn, I'm not having much luck here am I?? :(

Adam I do appreciate your thoughts on the dealer in question (I was afraid to dig further before now tbo :ill: ) but as I've said previously they seem at least 'willing' to 'sort things out'.

I did ask about the dipstick / oil filler plug recall earlier today, Product Program 0504, but haven't had a rely yet, so I cant even assume I have the correct one until I do.

Oh why oh why did I buy a feckin prototype!! :headbang:

They're a good bike when they're sorted but you'll need a sypathetic and willing dealer to help you get the right stuff done to it. I very much doubt your Scottish chums have much experience or skill in this area
I believe the only part of the engine that Buell actually made was the dipstick - and they managed to fuck that up

suggest you check your oil level soonest as Adam has said, I had to look at an Aprilla at the weekend that was well overfilled by the dealer at the PDI and was smoking like a pig, took over a pint out of the crankcase before the hot oil level returned to the top of the sight glass.

Cheers DJ, I've checked the cold level and it looked OK, if anything slightly below the half mark, as per http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/m ... 25984.html

Quote:
Readings taken with colder oil could lead to an overfull engine condition.

2. Stand the motorcycle upright (not leaning on sidestand) on a firm level surface. An uneven surface will produce a false oil reading.

I don't have a way of confirming the bike is totally level atm so I'll need to rig something up. Once I get a minute I'll have another go with the hot check to confirm.

Dealer stated I've the correct dipstick / oil filler pug is as per the update.

I made a stand that holds the bike plumb vertical with both wheels on the floor. It has 2 spirit levels glued to it so it can be checked in both planes. You'd be amazed how a couple of degrees can affect the level reading.

Given it is a Rotax engine it may be the same as the Aprila which is a right fecking pain. This has a small tube to show the oil level, must be done with the bike upright on level ground, with the oil upto temp and the engine running if I recall right. Overfilling is a common problem.

If the 1125 has a dipstick it is plainly a diff way of checking it. Sounds like even more of a PINTA.

2010 model 1125R/CR have a sight glass, big deal - it is a pain checking the oil level when hot but essential.

I made a frame from unistrut from work - cost me nothing, just roll the front wheel into it and hey presto - job done.

The bike should have had a sight glass from day one. Can the case containing the sight glass be fitted to earlier bikes, if so then we should badger BUELL for a replacement, what say you other 1125 owners.

Looking at the sight glass, it seems that these bikes have a different crankcase casting.
Even I think it's a bit much to ask for an upgrade ;)

Yep, I knocked this up out of some scrap. Good for holding the bike on the bench as well 8-)
