Good thread, I was thinking about gaskets earlier today. I'm going to rebuild the top end of a 1982 XL500. Do you put gaskets in dry, or do you coat them in gasket cement It's been so long since I've been inside an engine I can't remember

Composite and steel ones generally go on dry. For paper, I tend to use a very thin smear of Hylomar (non setting). Metal to metal joints like crankcases, a bit of silicone works, Yamabond etc is excellent.

Sikaflex marine sealer makes excellent replacement for thin paper gaskets where the gasket thickness is not important, pinch the joint together, allow sealer to set (next day)then fully tighten the joint. much better than silicon, also used it to repair torn gaskets, and smeared it on new gaskets to get a better oil/water tight seal especially where the case surface has been damaged. It can be cleaned with white spirit before it sets..
throw the rtv silicon in the bin.

Just use a Stanley blade and the metal gaskets.
