 Post subject: False neutral

Hi, Firebolt XB9R 2003 model (12k). Quite often, when changing up from 1st to second gear, I find what appears to be a false neutral. Another flick of the foot and it pops into second. Clutch cable adjustment/behaviour seems ok etc. Is this the tidings of doom etc :( for the gearbox, or is it something that the gear lever adjuster should get rid of :?:

Try again. It takes two goes to go from 1st to second :) as opposed to one :?:

Don't get upset-you're not hitting a false neutral, you're hitting neutral.....FACT!
Make sure that the primary is correctly adjusted as well as the clutch. Also, look at the shifter, make sure there isn't too much play due to worn bushes at the pivot etcIf all of those are ok start doing calf strengthening exercises!!

Thanks Beef. Primary chain tension is ok. Clutch 'feels' ok. Will check and adjust the linkage now and see if I can find any more neutrals :D

It sounds like it could be cable drag.

Try oiling the clutch cable. Something many do not do. Not even on a service.

Don't know the answer to this but is the Buell clutch cable suitable for oiling? Some modern cables are lined with plastic and if you oil them the linig swells and makes the clutch very heavy. For those a PTFE spray is the correct lubricant.

Thanks for the (positive) input. My lad adjusted the linkage and it sorted the problem fine. He (and I) are now happy with the result. What was happening was that when changing up from first to second it would find a neutral position that did not put the neutral light on....wierd :o Neutral light is working fine by the way. Anyway, all is well now and I have learnt a great deal from the problem and the thread :)

an every time you change the engine oil , change the gearbox oil too
its worth the extra £7 trust me.
