Just bought a new XB12SX which I'll pick up next week. Thinking about running in and if any of you can give me tips on revs and milage etc. First time with an American V-Twin so don't know what to expect. Any other information would help i.e must do mods to the stock bike.

Vary the revs, let it warm up, some say don't go over 5K rpm, but sensibly don't wring it's neck throughout the run-in period.
I'm running my XB12ss in at the mo', and have visited the whole rev range!!

IMHO it's more important that you make sure you don't let the engine labour, than it is to stay under a certain rev range. Doing 2000rpm up a steep hill in top gear with the throttle fully open, will cause more damage than allowing the engine to rev through the entire range with only partial throttle.

On a motorway running 60 mls per cycle. Starting with 3000 rpm max, then adding 500 rpm with each cycle. Keep rpm steady to ensure the engine is fully heated through at every engine speed, this is important because this leads to realistic clearance between parts. Highly recommended: change oil and filter after 2nd cycle and after 600 mls. If really required, then skip the second, not the first one.

Gives perfect results, is easily done within a day, and by far not as boring as the "usual" way.

ran mine in as per manual. but as others say dont lug it up at low revs. most of my early running in i kept to a minimum 2,500 rpm. dont forget to allow the brakes to bed in. use them regularly for the first 50/100 miles or so to bed the pads in. brakes are as important as the engine.

Run it in by the book..............OR........... do whatever floats your boat but don't post about it on a public forum and then expect to not be queried about it if it goes bang ;)

What they said I would say. I just went with the manual, did not rev it much past 4k rpm or let it labour in high gear if possible. My bike has 14k miles on the engine and it runs as sweet as a nut with almost no vibs.

The HD lump is classic American "tractor/cast iron" type engineering. Air/oil/fan cooling on Vee twins give the engine a hard time on its oil system and more so from new with the HD lump. Change the oil and filter every 2.5k miles to at least 10k miles. It needs 4k miles to run in and mine was sorted at about 6k. It gets better, like a BMW Boxer bike engine, with miles on it. Treat the engine well in its early life and it will pay you in the long run.

Find yourself a good dealer, get a FST fitted and read all about the bikes here.

Food for thought http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
About to run my X1 in, but dont fancy nailing it from the word go so i think i'll stick to keeping it under 4k for the first 500mls and change the oil after the first 100mls, not letting the engine labour and warm up first.
