When I was made redundant the staff clubbed together and bought me a couple of track days. I intend going to Cadwell but they have a strictly enforced noise limit of 105db. Do you think a standard X1 with American headers and a Vance and Hines pipe will stand a cat in hells chance of being quiet enough to get on track?

yes and no.

Depends on how nice the sound guy is, as your setup will most probably top that.

My full race system is 115-120 db !!

I thought as much. I'd better drag something else out of the shed on that day. :(

My TRX has a pair of Termis with some cut down DB killers in and that kicks out 102DB. To the ear, at 5k revs (2/3rds the redline I think), where it's tested, it sounds reasonably quiet and 3db more being a logarithmic scale, is a fair bit more noise.

Take some old rags and stainless scrubbing pads to stuff up the can for scrotineering and hope you don't get a jobsworth lOl

3Db difference is twice as loud or half as loud. i.e. 103Db is twice as loud as 100Db.

Cheers, Richard.

Ian

Why not go there when they have another track day on and ask them to test it there and then? Neil did that at Brands Hatch and they were really helpful. Sometimes they'll be a little generous with a v-twin, too. I got away with being marginally too loud on the grounds that locals complain more about whining IL4s...

And, whatever happens, at least it won't be as bad as going all the way to the 'Ring only to get shouted at and banned! Still gutted that my STT was only measured at 112db ;)

Good luck

Al

Good idea, Al, The only problem is that the track is 70 miles away across the Humber! I might sneak into the pits the next time they have some racing at the Mount or Carnaby. At least I'd know whether it will pass or fail.

Sorry but your statement is not quite correct. An increase by 6db is equal to a doubling in volume. Decibel maths is something I have tried to study a number if times and this is about all I can get.

You both are right. +6dB is double sound pressure level, +3dB is double sound power. Regarding "loudness" every value between +6dB and +10dB is considered acceptable.

But the real problem is: do these frigging measuring-machines know about this dilemma? :D

Are there any tracks that don't have a noise limit?

I'd love to give my CR a blip round somewhere after the fun I had at the Buell performance academy last year. Those of you that have heard my bike know why I'm asking!

Remus. No baffles. It might have been 114db. But it wasn't the loudest Buell there... ;)
