So you have a multimeter ... ? or a battery charger with a measure on it ... that should tell you

turn the ign on , but don't start the bike,
wait 2 minutes , then try and start it.

with the headlight on draining the battery, for 2 minutes if its low voltage it will struggle or fail to start.

a quick check NOT the ultimate test, really as Ash said a multimeter is a better way .

Take your seat off.

with the bike switched off, connect the meter across the battery, set the meter to DC Volts should show around 12-13volts.

start the bike up with the meter STILL connected , the voltage on starting will drop to around 10volts , less than 9volts while turning over battery is knackered, (& it wont start )

if it starts while running the volts should rise as you rev the motor, to around 13-14volts
if it doesn't the voltage regulator OR the alternator needs checking as per manual.

hope this helps :yup:

A multimeter is cheap enough at Maplins -

Slightly different approach is to come in after a ride and check the volts across the battery and then check again in the following morning. It should of dropped less than a volt. If it is around 11volts it's on it's way out.

Most batteries have 2+volts per the six cells giving 12plus v. So anything below 12v after standing a day or two is gioing down hill fast.

So, using the checklist:

Maz wrote:
Back to basics.......with the bike running at 2K rpm and a DC volt meter across the battery, what reading do you get ?....should be 13-15V.

Have you checked VR for bleeds ?.....should be zero
Have you checked stator windings for continuity to earth ?.....should be zero
Have you checked stator winding resistances ?....should be 0.1-0.3 ohms
Have you checked AC output of all 3 phases ?......should be around 35V @ 2K rpm.

1. No bleeds - checked + and - from 77A connector against earth (should have done 46B too :oooops: )
2. Zero continuity to earth at 46A connector
3. All between 0.1 and 0.2 Ohms (1 to 2, 1 to 3 and 2 to 3) at 46A connector
4. 37V AC at 2k at 46A connector

Output on the 77 connector is 1.3V DC. 77 connector is like new - which is surprising as bd666's bike looks like it has seen more action than Chuck Norris.
