I appreciate your advice folks. It must be quite offensive to those of you who find this stuff easy to have numbties like myself making a pigs ear out of things, and I'll probably concede defeat after this and never touch a spanner again. I like this bike. I really like this bike, and wanted to bond/be that little more self-sufficient.

Maz: I live in Farnham, on the Surrey side of the Surrey/Hampshire border. GU9. If you go beyond the working mens club, then you've gone too far.

The engine oil drain plug came out and went back in without any concerns what so ever. I did this before the attempt at draining the transmission oil, so am super miffed that it hasn't gone to plan.

Changing the filter by hand was clearly advice I misinterpreted from the 'how to', i'll also concede being a tosser, too.

Don't worry about it mate we all learn from our mistakes.
And your mistake will have hopefully stopped someone else making the same mistake.
These things happen don't beat yourself up about it.

Dont be so hard on yourself Doc. People want to help. On the other hand its clear you dont know the basics. They/we/I dont want to see you feck your bike. Seek practical/working advice.

Yeah man, everyone has to start somewhere... The important thing is to ask for advice when you need it, then follow it. Generally, people give advice based on experience, and we all learn from our mistakes...

Ok, I went to Halfords and got a filter strap. It has moved the fliter slightly, but now I can't seem to tighten it enough to grip the filter and turn. £14 for a strap, too.

Pissing down with rain now so will try again later. I'm starting to think i'm turning this thing the wrong way.

Update. <sigh> the strap has ripped right through the filter. I now have 9/10ths of the filter off and it is just connect by the top lip of metal. Any ideas on how to remove?

It seriously isn't fucking budging. Just so I can reassure myself here: I'm turning anti-clockwise, right? Lefty-loosy/righty-tighty and all that?

I have every tool imagineable to remove XB oil filters but usually just use a pair of slip joint pliers (sometimes called water pump pliers).....

Man you just crack me up
You sound like a really nice bloke, so please stop spannering your bike, and take it Tubbs or Maz. I assure you it will be worth it.
In the interest of a damn good laugh, can you take some pictures of the remnants of your oil filter for us!
