Use kind, gentle tools only at this point: wrap something like a leather strap (surely you have some of these hanging on the back door of your closet lOl ) or some such material several turns around what's left of the filter for the strapping to get a good grip on it and not slip, and turn it (left to loose, as you are looking at it straight-on from where the butt end of the filter was, looking toward the case). Given the state of things, do not use anything hard/metal/sharp at this point. The leverage you should be able to get with wrapping the filter with straps should get it to turn - carefully: get it to turn straight, without torquing it out of axis.

This should work fairly quickly, with no risk of damage to the case where the filter attaches. Good luck.

Ok. Old filter off in less than a minute.

How do I remove the primary case so I can take it down to the local place to get drilled?

All the bolts are out and it aint budging.

Thanks

Just as a side note, did someone here stumble across something like this one:

(I'm sure, they didn't mean "unscrew" ... lOl )

Assuming you've removed the clutch release mech and fully backed off the chain adjuster, then just tap the case with a hide mallet to break the gasket.

 .........with the derby cover removed, you pull the spring, complete with lock nut off the centre screw.
Using a screwdriver, turn the screw clockwise until the barrel nut can be removed.
Lift the release mech out of the case and un-hook the cable.
Simples :headbang:

Thanks Maz,

as I was typing my previous post he'd already whipped off the bits.

Primary case now in a bag and waiting to be dropped off tomorrow for its fix. Reconstructing the bike on Sunday.

Thanks again folks (Maz).

p.s I was watching and learning most of it. Fingers crossed its all been absorbed.

Incidentally; the oil filter came out as follows:

Rubber mallet and a chisel applied to the 'ring' inside the upper part of the filter. Tap tap tap and off it popped.

Docca,

If you are rebuilding the bike yourself, here's a few things that are worth bearing in mind.

1) Ensure the gasket faces on the engine cases are properly clean before you start reassembling it.

2) You do know about tightening up the case bolts sequentially and a little at a time, don't you? (Err, you do know which bolts came out of which hole??)

3) Do not overtighten the clutch cable where it screws into the case. Get this wrong and you'll either strip the thread (and be back where you started, 'cos the case will need to come off again and get a new thread fitted) or you crack the case (ouch!)

4) Do not overtighten the three bolts on the clutch inspection cover - again, these threads pull out very easily if overtightened.

5) Remember to refit a new oil filter before trying to add the oil.

6) Don't use your strap thing to replace the new oil filter - fill the filter with oil, smear oil on the rubber gasket and tighten by hand.

I'm sure others will either tell me that some of the above is wrong or suggest other things to bear in mind, but I hope this helps.

Dave
