Well I managed 80miles tonight before it played up first sign of trouble was one single backfire on the overrun approaching a roundabout ........went to overtake a car on the next stretch of road and there was a distinct lack of power and as i got alongside the engine cut out totally .......coasted to a halt ...the bike would restart after just a couple of minutes but the lack of power was obvious and if tried to give it any welly would cut out again ....had to stop about 5 times in the next 15 miles.
got home and plugged ecm spy straight in but no obvious problems that i could see.

What were the plugs like?

* Wet (no ignition)
* White (fuel starvation)
* Normal colour and dry ( fuel cut or fuel and igniton cut at same time)

If it was the fuel filter wouldn't it affect it from the start?

I'm not doubting you but if you have a blocked or dirty fuel filter surely you would have a reduced flow right from the start.

My thoughts have been towards the fuel feed/tank venting in this instance......

yep i think after our conversation today that's where i'll be looking next ........tonight was the first time that there was a performance reduction just prior to the cutting out.

Well i've just fitted a generic filter so will go for a ride soon (not sure i'll get a long enough one to prove anything though ). BUT the new filter can be blown through easily and although when i disconnected the original despite the fuel pipe freely emptying back through the filter, when i tried to blow through it I couldn't in either direction. Now i don't make an habit of blowing filters so don't know how easily you can blow through a clean buell one. lOl

Funnily enough, I always blow through old fuel filters to evacuate the fuel before binning them......no problem at all in either direction (and my lungs are fucked)

Kev, I've said this before but I find your attitude towards basic routine maintainance quite appalling, especially considering what you do for a living.
How many times have you attempted a big trip for your bike to let you down due to lack of proper service ?........are you gonna wait for your head bearings to fail and cause you to have an accident before you change them ?
