Well i've just fitted a generic filter so will go for a ride soon (not sure i'll get a long enough one to prove anything though ). BUT the new filter can be blown through easily and although when i disconnected the original despite the fuel pipe freely emptying back through the filter, when i tried to blow through it I couldn't in either direction. Now i don't make an habit of blowing filters so don't know how easily you can blow through a clean buell one. lOl

Funnily enough, I always blow through old fuel filters to evacuate the fuel before binning them......no problem at all in either direction (and my lungs are fucked)

Kev, I've said this before but I find your attitude towards basic routine maintainance quite appalling, especially considering what you do for a living.
How many times have you attempted a big trip for your bike to let you down due to lack of proper service ?........are you gonna wait for your head bearings to fail and cause you to have an accident before you change them ?

But as i said to you yesterday Maz that filter has been on for less than 15K .......probably nearer 12K ..............the X1 as only ever failed on one big trip before and that was when the front wheel bearing failed .......always has regular oil and filter changes + gearbox oil etc.............it's had at least 3 sets of wheel bearings as well ;)

Come on, lets have news about Muffin...

God only knows why it has broken down when you are so meticulous with your preventative maintenance... I reckon it is your headstock bearings, Muffin gets tired and just needs a rest.

Well folks ....it wasn't the fuel filter anyway ......did about 60 miles and cut out again .........found i could restart again on the button before coasting to a stop.......managed to keep restarting every few miles and got to within 200 yards of my house when it would finally go no further .......could restart but with major backfires black smoke flames from exhaust but wouldn't keep running ...luckily Harry and his mum happened to drive past so Harry jumped out and helped push the 200 uphill yards home lOl
This time I did manage to make the engine management light come on twice and when i checked it at home had 3 historic trouble codes showing .....I'm nearly certain that i'd cleared any codes since checking over the other night.
just tried restarting and although no current codes showing bike just backfires and blacksmokes a lot of the time ..................neighbour looked like he was about to get snotty so turned off for a while and will go and restart when i suspect he'll be trying to watch eastenders lOl

The faults listed are
code 11 tps short to ground
code15 intake air sensor shorted to supply voltage or open
code 33 fuel pump short to ground or open .

Now if they are listed as last fault shown first there is a chance the fuel pump one was whilst i had the tank off the other night....so that leaves the 2 today as tps and airtemp sensor so where is the common denominator of those 2 ?

And more importently are these the cause or effect of the problem :?

These two and the camshaft sensor share the ground wire: color black/white, ECM pin gray-7 and joint S12 as common ground. Probably this wire is broken (between S12 and the ECM), then the 5 volts of IAT build a false TPS ground and shift the TPS signal to high.

High TPS means WOT, this would explain the black smoke because of too much fuel.

Amazing that the CPS isn't involved then ...

Next thing I would check is the earth wire of TPS, IAT and CPS and the connectivity between joint S12 and ECM pin G7. Checking ECM ground connections in general also seems a good idea.
