I don't know the history of my Free Spirits exhaust but it is loud. Trojen has told me there is no decibel killer for my exhaust can or removable baffles. I'm wondering if the fibreglass packing inside needs replacing? Never done this before, never needed too! Anyone know who does this for Free Spirits or any exhaust come to think about it?

Found this website in the USA but is it really that easy?

PH ..Measure your pipe outlet diameter an then type in 'exhaust baffles' on ebay..several come up..maybe there is one to suit! :sun:

Dave!

Yes I own a RD350R since June 2008. It's completely stock and no need to mess with exhausts! I also own a RZV500R (RD500LC) since summer last year and no need to mess with exhausts! I had two strokes when I was much younger and always run stock exhausts so never needed to repack. Infact I've only ever had two after market exhausts, Free Spirits and my current BMW. This is my first post or question regarding exhaust packing only because my exhaust is loud and I was wondering if the packing is in need of renewal?

We are all at different levels on this forum in regards to technical skill, experience and even confidence. I consider myself near the bottom but I have a go and learn and probably make mistake along the way! I don't agree that my question is stupid or that is makes me look like an idiot. If people think that of me already well there's nothing I can do about that!

Apparently I do have a decibel killer in there after all in the form of a mesh plate but I assumed I did not have one cause trojen have a pic of my exhaust with what looks like a removable baffle in the exit port which I do not have! Apparently they changed the design! According to some who have commented on my exhaust as I ride is that they are not particularly noisy, but it's noisy for the rider cause of the position of the exhaust port! OK nothing I can do about that unless I change the exhaust can. But asking questions means hopefully learning from more experienced people and this is how I have learned most about bike maintenance - by asking!

PS; I always read, and re read what I post!

PH,

I had considered PM'ing you, but as Beef dived in, I'm posting in the open forum instead.

I chose my words carelessly when I last replied to you, and for that I apologise. I don't think you are an idiot - I think you really want to understand how your Buell works and how you can fix it or make it better.

When I ran my RDs (and many other two strokes) I would drop the pipes off, remove the baffles and decoke the whole exhaust thing every few months. This meant that I regularly got to see how the exhaust padding was holding up and would (every two to three de-cokes) replace it. I assumed that all other two stroke owners would go through the same routine. Now, I used to put huge miles on my RDs, up to 20k a year was common enough, so I'd de-coke at every 5K or so miles. If you are not clocking up this sort of mileage, you might not have gone through this process.

If you have put significantly over 5k on your RD / RZV, then its due for a de-coke. If you have no idea how to do this, then let me know and I'll talk you through it.

Your biggest problem here is that people here tend to take a view early. With all due respect, the "camcoat vs PJ1" question wasn't really smart: I think that I do understand what motivated you to ask, but - with hindsight - what reply did you expect? Remember that Buell / HD bit the bullet and paid for camcoat as a warranty issue - if they had thought they could have got away with it, don't you think that HD would have just posted out a couple of cans of PJ1 to each owner instead? If HD decided Camcoat was the better option in the long run, who here was going to argue?

Its late - my Vet prog is about to start. Pm me if you wnt to continue a discussion.

Dave

Pash,

I take it that you are not aware of this new TV series.

Its about a vet that deals with "minor" animal problems, such as a cat that got run over by a combine harvester and had both front paws sheared off.

I futher assume that you didn't spot my post saying that this programme was coming up and that he was that same vet that saved my cat when all other vets said there was no chance of survival.

No "trickywoo" here - its just that I'd like to keep up to date with the latest progress on external fixators for cats (normally, when you talk about "a cat in a cage", you assume that the cage is a box holding the cat in, not a cage attached to the cat, holding his bones together).

I am really biting my tounge to not go into a full-blown rant. IIRC, you weren't on the site when this all this kicked off. You didn't follow all my problems when the normal vet wanted to amputate or put the cat down and the roller-coaster ride that folllowed. (TV prog vet fitted titanum braces to leg bones, cat burst screws in new braces, vet fixed it again, cat dislocated knee-cap, TV vet makes new plastic knee cap for cat, cat got run over again, etc etc).

As I am a pet owner who cares about his pets, and given the above, I think you will agree that "Trickwoo" wasn't really the most appropriate reply.

Dave

It's a fuckin cat fer christs sake Dave......far kinder to the animal (and ya wallet) to give it a 20p bit of lead rather than subject it to all the trauma of extensive/painful and for a cat, very un-natural surgery.

Who were you trying to fix........the cat or yourself ?????

Maz,

One simple answer to your question.

Come down here sometime and say hello to "Sparky". He happily goes straight up and over 6 foot fences without a second thought, still catches more rats / mice / birds than you can shake a stick at.

Is still a very loving "lap cat" when he wants to be, but it never lasts long and he's back at the door stamping his one remaining rear foot asking to go out again soon enough.

Just come on down and look this full-of-life and clearly very happy-with-life cat square in the eyes and tell him that a bullet would have been kinder! Who are you trying to kid - my full of beans cat or your own personal prejudices? :?:

I thought long and hard about what I was putting him through and I sure as hell did not do it just for me. Remember that, about six months after this surgery, he got hit by another car and broke the leg again and at that point I decided that I couldn't put him through that sort of surgery again, so we amputated instead. Do you assume that I had suddenly "fixed myself" in the interim, or is the more likely scenario that in both circumstances I was actually acting in the best interests of the cat (at both times, guided by the best vetinary advice available)?

You know that I love you as a person, but you really made a poor psycologist.

Dave

Sorry Dave, I don't watch much TV, basically cos every time I turn it on (as a time filler), there is nothing of interest to watch (apart from repeats of Top Gear, repeats of Grand Designs, the world cup and Moto GP etc.).

Feel free to rant, but cos I am so out of it all, the only vets programmes I am aware of are All Creatures Great and Small which was on when I was about 5 years old, and has scarred me for life, both with the old lady with the poodle called Trickywoo, who I think never woke up after surgery, and with Siegfried Farnham putting his hand up a cow's bottom, and the other of course the one with Michaela Strachan (you broke my heart, Michael Strachan you tore me apart...).

Anyway, apologies for dissing your favourite programme.

Hi Dave, maybe I do need to decoke my exhausts?

I expected camcoat to be better than a tin of paint. However I've never used pj1 and they seem to rave about it on the RD website with lasting results. Camcoat just seemed to be an over priced luxury......to me at least, also read some bad experiences.

Dave FS, I'm an animal lover, right next to my potatoes..... the 'best' advice from vets tends to be guided by pound notes......
