My first pay packet was 7 pound 10 shillings. I managed to run the van and be on the *iss virtually every night. Was living at home then.........getting closer to being put in a fecker now.

1971 , 15yr old apprentice Joinery machinist on £5 a week, £4.10s after deductions. The only fuel price I can remember was Brown and Mild at 11d a pint...
Stuck that job out for 5 ish years moving on to the bench then self employed on building sites.

1975 , a gallon of petrol and shot of two stroke oil , 10 smokes and change from a pound

I remember in the early 70s my Dad driving past garages with his old Ford Zodiac car running on fumes because they were charging 37p per gallon, but three garages further on it was only 36.5p! I remember the same thing happening a few years earlier for double or triple green shield stamps.




I ran the Zodiac as a hand me down from 1978 until 1988. In 82 I would budget £16 a week for 4 star! Happy Days.

Interestingly, I normally use the v power or ultimate fuel , last week I filled the car up with supermarket fuel ordinary diesel, I had a bit of running around to do , couple of long journeys rather than the usual stop start, week later and just refuelled , I keep records on spread sheet to show if any problems fuelling wise developing . surprised to see best fuel figures for almost a year on the cheap stuff , returning 68mpg. I shall still put some of the more expensive fuel in from time to time as I believe the lubrication properties and cleaning properties are beneficial for the older vehicles . but nonetheless, interesting results with the cheap diesel

For the last three weeks petrol at my usual garage has jumped by 5p / litre each time I fill up! Now just about £9.50 / gal for V-Power.

Then on my gas bill I see that despite my only using about £8 inc VAT of the stuff, I still have to pay £47 in standing charges!

I tried to read up on why energy/fuel companies can legally offload costs onto consumers and still rack up record profits when the raw materials are so expensive. A case of them being both poacher and gamekeeper it seems.
All I know is that there are a lot of people in suits getting filthy rich while we suffer.

A pretty short sighted way of doing business if vast swathes of the population cannot afford to buy the home factory items and recreational goods which sustain the rest of the economy. I.e. I now plan to cancel my landline contract to put towards gas charges! Tough cookies Branson!

Most people can`t afford to invest in companies while their mortgages and kids are costing them , although the pensions they have do. Your big out of town centre shopping places are pension pots, it`s wether it`s a french or german pension pot

I can’t help thinking that the media circus has missed the point again with who lied about what in number 10! Boris probably had his mind elsewhere at the time when Pincher’s antics were first mentioned. Isn’t this what always happens as our bumbling leader tries to apply logic to a live situation?

I recently heard that while ministers try to boast about a 5p cut in fuel duty that they had to ask fuel companies to pass this cut on to consumers, but it hasn’t happened yet!

You can see who is really running the country! Meanwhile in European countries the cut in duty has been 15 to 25p and it applies.

Not bought diesel for my car in a month as I don't use it much. It was 172.9 a month ago. On the way home from visiting my father who had just got back from a week in St Ives, I went past the local Sainsbury and it was 198.9. Decide to try the local Asda just outside town centre. 105.7, but sold out at 9:30pm. Didn't bother looking elsewhere.

I like the look of the newish Mash 650 Classic as a back up bike and possible eco commuter, but with the way fuel prices are going the more humble Enfield Meteor 350 is starting to look appealing. They say it’s better to ride than you might think!

I would add to the above post.....as we all know, our old air-cooled Buells are already pretty amazing in the fuel economy department. I get 68mpg trundling around with my mates RE 411 and 70mpg following another friends Harley at Legal speeds.

Those Jap originated 4v singles were never that great to start with; 50mpg for the Mash 650/Honda Dommi, and only 61mpg for my Yam SRX. Even the RE singles might not better the Buell by that much to cover the cost of purchase. The main attraction of an Enfield Meteor would be that I wouldn’t mind leaving it parked at my usual places of work, or in my girlfriends garden overnight.
