Another 'low point' (for those that had just bought new lOl ) was the slashing of RRPs by the MoCo... wasn't that 2000 also?

While we're on about prices, I recall the '98 model year prices were - M2 £8345, S1 £8995, S1W £9995, S3 £9995 and S3T £10995. Could be wrong on some of those but I think I'm spot on with the S1 and S1W prices.

I also used to travel regularly to NL between 1980 and 2002. I recall the £ to Guilder exchange rate going from 4.5 to 1 to (IIRC) just over 2 to 1. So the Buell in NL would indeed have cost a fortune in £'s.

Having trouble remembering that, was the US$ very weak at that time?

Not sure about the exchange rates, think they just couldn't sell 'em at those '98 prices you quoted! lOl
The prices dropped by something like £1,000 to 1,500 ?? across the range, I seem to remember... and it caused a lot of resentment among new owners who'd paid the full 'old' price, as you can imagine!

I recall when I bought my Buell from Bauer Millett on Deansgate, Manchester, they had a very original black cafe racer 1000cc Sportster at £9999. That seemed very expensive and I never saw it sold. I guess that would have been a bargain.

And............ years before that going back to about 1976 when BJ Wests was on the other side of Deansgate, they were then the Harley dealer. Back then Harley's were rare and rarely (never) seen around my parts. Literally for several years they had a black cafe racer Sportster in the window at £1500. Seemed a lot of money back then when I was on £12 a week!

I have vague recollections, but can't really remember that, I must admit. My M2 was discounted when I bought it in 97 and so were the S1's at the time. I'm not sure if S1W's were ever sold at a discount though? I remember Bauer Millett were originally allocated three for the whole of the 98 model year. Then of course the S1W Strike etc.... came along later in 98.
