Third attempt at packing my torque hammer & hopefully done this time.
Quite a bit quieter without any power loss.
Two types of stainless gauze wrapped round the perf tube. to protect the wadding.
Course 1.5ml holes x 4 wraps & 100 micron gauze over that x 6 wraps & both tied with stainless wire, wadding just wrapped as tight as I could get it.
Just done 50 miles with no change in sound, so more confident that it's ok this time.
Smoked like a two stroke when I first started it till it burnt off the coating on the gauze.
All in all though a good learning experience.
Have a great day all.

Another 100 + miles today & still sounds like it's doing it's job ok. Much quieter at cruising speeds and deeper in tone, plus it doesn't set car alarms off in little villages. All is well until the butterflies are straight, even then it howls rather than sounding like two Manx Norton's with straight through mega's.
Quite pleased with the results.

After the resounding success of the latest rebuild of my Torque Hammer silencer, I decided to do exactly the same rebuild on my HMF silencer. Cleaned it up while I was at it.
It runs fine with my T.H. ECU although was extremely loud & very droney which was a bind after a couple of miles.
It is a great pipe though with very different characteristics to the Torque Hammer & should be a better sound as well now.
Pics below, any questions please ask.

Runs great & sounds much better than it did after it's warmed through.
Definitely not an out & out race exhaust, manages torque very differently, much smoother delivery curve from low down to flat out, easier round town & great for blasting around the lanes. Feels a little more restrictive & definitely not as exhilarating as riding with the Torque Hammer.

So....
Just a report on the HMF exhaust really.
I've been riding with this HMF for around a month, 750 miles or so and it still sounds great, nice deep tone & continues to perform like did after first rebuilding it, so hopefully no degradation of the baffling and quiet enough to stay under the radar. The Torque Hammer ECU was a little on the rich side for it, so changed the ECU for another that has the correct tune on for this exhaust, that was done after around 100 miles or so.
All seems fine so far.

Hi folks,

Well my Torque Hammer exhaust needs repacking, it's very, very loud again and it's due for it's test in July. Despite looking like I did an ok job with it last time, it seems to have only lasted a couple of years around 4000 miles or so.

Not sure if that's normal?

This time I've bought loose wool so we'll see how that goes

I've swapped over to the HMF pipe for the time being as it works fine and hasn't done many miles since I repacked it. It's certainly a lot quieter than the Torque Hammer is currently, which tells you something about the noise levels coming out now, as HMF's are not quiet by any means.

I'll post pics of the Torque hammer rebuild when I get the wool. It's now my fourth attempt at this silencer, at some point I'll get it right ha ha.

Have a great day and enjoy the sunshine. Paul.

Buell 1125 Torque Hammer silencer rebuild.
Hi folks, so after drilling off the stainless pop rivet tops, centre punching the remaining rivet through into the wadding. Here’s what we have.
Doesn’t actually look too bad at first, at least there isn’t a great gaping hole in the wadding, but there is a 5 inch split which goes through the first layer of wadding. The stainless gauze is intact and nothing really looks like it should be making the noise it was doing.
On closer inspection though there is a fair bit of loose soot on the perforated tube, which kind of indicates to me that the mixture is rich at some point or more likely not burning correctly. It would though make the exhaust note different enough to warrant my attention, which is why I’m at this point.
So while I’m here, I’ll check and clean the air filter, check and put new plugs in and it’s possible that will correct the mixture as it isn’t that bad. I’ll also check the AF levels when it’s running with this exhaust again.
Here’s a pic of the dismantled exhaust, wadding, gauze etc.
I’ve just had an 800g bag of loose wool delivered today, but also have a roll of the self expanding 1000 degree stuff arriving tomorrow. Not decided which to use yet but it seems with the self expanding stuff you don’t have to use stainless gauze. I’m undecided about that also.
Has anyone used either during a rebuild and have any advice? Thanks in advance. Paul.

Hi folks, with no patience for waiting around till Hermes delivered the expanding baffle material, I got on with rebuilding the silencer with loose wool.
I used two wraps of the fine stainless gauze, (was four wraps) I left out the heavyweight gauze altogether as I wasn’t sure it helped in any way. (see pic TH 02) The heavyweight gauze is fitted under the fine gauze.
Once the fine gauze was wrapped and tied with stainless wire, I refitted the front end cap with the perf tube into the silencer, (see pic TH 02) I used a screwdriver to line up all the holes and pop riveted that secure.
I then proceeded to stuff the silencer with the loose wool, probably 600g of the 800g bag making sure there was enough to fill the rear end cap once that was fitted. Popped everything back together, lined up the holes with a screwdriver as there’s also a carbon end cap to line up. I used 5mm alloy rivets (they’ll be easier to drill out next time).
The whole silencer weighs in at just over a kilogram, so happy enough with that. Just a good clean now and then refit onto the Buell. I’ll let you know how this one stands the test of time.
Pic shows the tools I used. Have a great day folks. Paul.
