 Post subject: xb12 exhaust on an xb9

Can an xb12 standard exhaust with the valve be made to fit an xb9?

Mates cans just disintegrated on his 9 and I have the original of my 12 in the garage.

Yes both 07 pre modded heads.

Advised him to take a look at your site for long term term solution, or get Tubbs to work his magic on my std one.

It will fit, you just won't be able to use the active exhaust valve (or whatever they call it !) as the XB9 doesn't have the wiring for it - you can either leave the valve shut, or wire it open (or any combination in between).

XB9 has the connector for it but not the sub harness, nor the motor nor mechanical cable.

ECM on an 07 XB9 will be an IB310 which is capable.

I helped a guy on here get the valve working on an XB9 previously and more recently Gunter has done it on his. Tezza has a manual cable to operate his...

With the valve closed, both cans are about identical. The only difference seems to be that two tubes inside swapped their positions, but are of the same length. We tried several setups, this one seems to work best:

Excuse me for jumping in with a question .. what does this valve actually do ? No after market pipe seems to have one so is it better to mod a standard pipe and keep the valve or go for a new pipe without one ?

the valve opens an expansion chamber to adjust the header length for low and high rpms:

This picture implies that gas flow is using a shorter path with the valve opened, which is bullshit of course, simply because of the mass inertia of the flowing gas. But pressure waves will run into the chamber, and that makes the difference.

Third party mufflers with untuned header commonly show a typical dip in torque, similar to that shown below:

Thanks - I kind of like the torque .. not sure I want to lose it :?
But not keen on the weight, sound or the fact standard can looks prone to rusting out either ...
