Hi guys and gals.

A few weeks ago my 2000 X1 ( owned since new and self modified ) developed an eratic tickover and an occasional slight hestitation gently coming off a closed throttle in first gear on the way back from a low speed outing ( with an inexperienced rider on their own bike in tow ) in the Cotswolds. It otherwise runs just fine.

I have no engine management warning light on show in the speedo ( as occured when the rear cylinder head engine temperature sensor failed about 6 years ago ) and the only mechanical work I've done fairly recently was to remake and replace a broken carbon fibre airbox following a low speed off Sept 2011 and then replace both front and rear mounts on my Scorpion stainless steel muffler ( those kind and helpful folk at Scoropion kindly replaced the broken rear stainless strap foc ) - which broke on a motorway in northern Spain a few months ago ( following a 560 mile single day blast from St Malo and right across France into Spain via the central Pyrenees ) on my own when the bike otherwise performed flawlessly.

I will check the plugs and the connection to the inlet air temperature sensor within the Sidewinder K&N air filter when I get a chance but my suspicion centres on the Lambda unit / O2 sensor on the rear exhaust header and I'm aware of the need to get the ECU reset on a HD Scanalyser following any adjustments or changes.

Any helpful suggestions from the mechanically minded and fuel injected tuber experienced fraternity would be much welcomed.

Just a stab in the dark, but I'd try a TPS reset first. Not difficult, even a complete pooter retard like me can manage it lOl

Thanks guys.

Sorry for the day in replying but I'm just back from my sunny hols.

I'll have to get someone to ride behind me and look out for any signs of smoke in the exhaust ( particularly on the over-run ) but the bike only has about 13,000 miles on the odometer, is rarely taken over 4,000 rpm, VERY rarely taken over 5,000 rpm and has just passed it's annual MOT so I'd be surprised if the intake valve seal was leaking and, even if it was, the wear between valve stem and guide bore ought not to have worn to the extent that it would allow a significant intake of air bypass.

I'll have a look at my full X1 manual and assume, from the comments made, that the TPS reset referred to is a purely mechanical process that ought to put it back into the same, original mechanical and electronic sensing position that it was in when the ECU was last reset on a Scanalyser ( about 8 years ago when the rear cylinder temp sensor was changed )?

Oooops!

They aren't talking about valve seals .............it is the seals between the intake manifold and head that are prone to leaking whilst the engine is running spray them with wd40, if the engine note changes you know it has sucked the wd40 past the seal ;) ................. and the TPS needs resetting far more often than once every 8 years ;) ............. if you havn't got ecmspy find someone local that has that can reset tps for you ;)
