Before you ask, I've been on the T5 Forum but with no luck ;)

I've got an '08 T5 diesel van with a remapped ECU (now it's very fast and grunty lOl ) but I was bit late for a Trial this morning and started it without giving it a few secs for the glow plugs to warm up. It started and ran a treat for a few miles in slow traffic but when I booted it to get past a line of tourists off to the sea side, it lacked a lot of power and I could only wind it up to about 70mph in 'limp' mode. It wasn't the weight of the bike in the back, because it's knitted from Helium lOl No ECU light was showing, so I turned it off and started it again, and all was fine. I'm just a bit concerned about it happening again.

The MAP sensor was clean as a whistle, the DPF is clean and I've stripped the EGR valve just incase that wasn't operating, hoses aren't split and electrical plugs have been pulled and wiggled lOl All seems fine?

Any ideas about the cause from the UKBEG collective? lOl

......and will I have to take to a VAG dealer to check for stored fault codes, or will a code reader as used by the village garage be specific enough?

I bought one of these:

Only cos it was cheaper than the local garage doing it...

Dunno what your problem is nor if a fault would be reported...

I run a turbo diesel for work and every now and then get a bit of water in the fuel filter, which results in sudden poor running, its a quick job to drain it at the side of the road, and reprime the system , then its as good as new again.......not quite new at 160,000 miles

dont know if yours has a Variable vane turbo, sometimes they can stick open/shut which will throw a boost pressure code and puts you in limp mode, turbo then frees itself but your still in limp mode.
next time you turn ignition off/on it clears the limp mode, vanes are now free so everything is back to normal.
Vnt turbos do benefit from a good thrash every now and then to clear the soot, extreme cases where its happening regularly you can use oven cleaner, spray it into the exhaust manifold, run motor for a few seconds, switch off, leave for 20 mins then take it for a run , or strip the turbo to do a proper job.
Just a thought Adam, good luck.

I don't know if this applies to your remapped ECU but on some engines, a cold start puts a flag that the engine is cold at start up and triggers glow plugs and cold fueling map, then when glow plugs switch out the map switched to water temp based. If you start without waiting for the plugs on a standard ECU the flag is usually overwritten by the coolant temp once revs get above zero but in a remapped ecu it's possible it isn't and hence retains cold start mapping.

Bloody hell that's cheap!

My Fiat van has done the same thing twice in it's life, last time was a couple of years ago, lasted for around 20 miles or so and then just cleared itself. No codes and no explanation.

Thanks Chaps, I didn't know any of that 8-) It gets a good spanking every time it's taken out and it's not used for short runs, so I don't think soot is an issue.
Just taken it for a 40 mile run, some on dual carrigeway, some down single track lanes, and it seems fine :yup:

Are you sure it hasn't gone into get home safe mode?
Are T5 has done this a couple of times. Something to do with the turbo not getting enough power to it or too much, something of that elk anyway.
Hasn't done it in months and is always fine when we restart it. No error messages on vag.
