....a bit late in the day, but I finally found /was given a nice bit of pipe for my 'flange insert' :? ;) 50mm OD and 2mm thick pipe offcut from 'a garage' that repairs trucks. So I can finally start cutting, beating, and grinding this week-end.

Resurrecting this old thread in celebration....I've had a 'road to Damascus' experience today almost worthy of it's own thread. :D

1) Whilst I was feltling the XB my car was getting a new cam belt and water pump fitted at a 20% lower bill than I was expecting (ain't got time to work on cars anymore).

2) My XB did pass it's MOT 2 hours later.

3) All my theories about streamlining the inlet to my Stealth appear to be vindicated.

It was a rush last night still sanding the inlet filler in the dark with a torch (don't want that dust anywhere inside my buildings), but the can went back on before midnight. On start up this morning on my way to the MOT (there's confidence for you) the Stealth sounded different. Just as deep, but less hollow. It no longer goes 'BORK!', now it goes 'BURP!' lOl

These two factors indicate to me a fatter and faster gas flow, which is what I was hoping for.
I noticed this about your Firebolt pash whilst following you through the back streets of Bristol and wanted my Buell to sound as crisp.

Once warmed up the whole plot felt much better; seamless power from just above tickover all the way up (as far as I went). It felt more like the XB12's I have ridden, but obviously without the big power that lifts the front wheel so easily.
It was like just having a TPS reset and someone also threw in a free supercharger.
The Stealth is quieter and yet more intoxicating, with a rich thrumming sound as you breeze passed cars. Give it some big throttle at lower speeds and it BURPS! catapulting forward like one of those demented supermoto singles! ;) Fuelling feels correct at all times. I don't know what it's like a higher speeds, but to be honest; if it stays this good I don't care about higher speeds.

I suspect that there is more to come as I could have filled the inlet curved pipe more, but I will let this one run for a while to see how the putty stands up to the shaking motor. I don't know how much of the gains are from smoothing out the steps put in by Stealth's economy build or by the streamlining of the header inlet joint, but I figured that the Stealth's main components were basically right and there was potential there, because I'd experienced it before with the existing can when I got the throttle and exhaust just right. It would be interesting to hook it up to your lap top sometime pash. ;)

Now all I need is some warmer weather. :?

It has some big steps in diameter in the headers, there are some cones that look a bit like this:

These are pulse converters to try to reduce the amplitude of the wave transmitted from the other cylinder which arrives at the exhaust valve of the cylinder in question.

I notice some products on the market in the US called 'torque rings' lOl not sure where those go?

My theory is that whatever steps or bends you have in a system, it matters less if the diameter of the pipe stays generally constant. Those pulse converters appear to be of short duration then the continuing pipe is of the same diameter. The problem with my can inlet was the variation of tube diameter over as many inches between the header and the silencer. The key is to have the optimum speed of gas, not have it slowing down and expect it to speed up again. :? Still proof is in the pudding! ;) Must publish a drawing like yours pash so other 'putty fingers' can streamline their inlets. lOl

Torque rings are supposed to fit in the top of the pipe near as near as you can to the valve. I think the idea is so you can run more timing overlap without sacrificing power lower down. Snake oil imho, but my mate runs them in his Sportster based scramble sidecar outfit and seems to think they 'might' work :? lOl

He has sawn the gearbox off though and replaced with a Norton box, so it might be the lack of weight compensating lOl

Naughty Adam - are you seriously suggesting that all those Harley riders on open stacks are wrong - God what next? Ask Mrs Adam for a good spanking - right now.

Sawed off the Harley Sportster box and fitted a 'standard' Norton one instead on how much power? :? Must be easier to strip down after every race. lOl

What a gorgeous bike! But why in gods name did they have to make air scoops that look like they fell of something from War of the Worlds??
You could probably fit some kick ass speakers in them and have one he'll of a moving stereo!
